Beethoven’s penultimate sonata for violin and piano, almost certainly the most famous of the ten, was originally dedicated to the composer’s friend George Bridgetower. Bridgetower reportedly sight-read the work at its premiere; but later in the evening, when over dinner he spoke slanderously of a woman Beethoven admired, Beethoven decided to dedicate the sonata instead to the great violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer.
The “Kreutzer” is an ambitious middle period work of huge emotional scope. Its finale is a lively tarantella in rondo form, a piece originally conceived as the conclusion for the earlier A major violin sonata but which was in that instance replaced with a set of variations.
